WrestleMania Sadness

On missing out on Mania weekend.

I’ve never wished I was hanging out on skid row more than I do this weekend.

Last year, The Elitists did our first ever group trip to WrestleMania 38 in Dallas, TX.  During the whirlwind of running between indie shows, we discussed a need to attend WrestleMania 39 in LA for 2023.  Briefly after our return to reality, we looked at where Wrestlecon and GCW shows would be held so we could get a walking distance hotel and quickly realized that we’d either be paying $500+ a night or we’d literally have to stay in the Skid Row neighborhood in LA.  This coupled with Sean’s engagement and Mrs. Chris’ pregnancy news led to us deciding to pass on this years festivities.  A decision I was fine with up until this week.

It’s ironic.  I see my friends excitement over March Madness and hear them discuss taking time off work for the first few rounds and think they’re crazy.  Yet, I sit here now as I write this on Thursday night jealous that Sean and Chris took tomorrow off to watch the Mania week indies.  The pageantry and presentation of WrestleMania is incredible, don’t get me wrong, but what makes WrestleMania week so special for me is what happens around it: fans coming together from around the world to watch indie shows and share bathrooms with a fully costumed Jushin “Thunder” Liger.  We all became fans of Ninja Mack, “Speedball” Mike Bailey, Marina Shafir and others after getting to see them live and up close.

I so badly wish we were in LA for it this year. I see the videos being posted from Walemania, I look at the card we’re missing for ROH and Bloodsport and wish I was with my boys.  Hell, I’d slam another god-awful Ranch Water again if it meant I’d get to be experiencing sharing a hotel with DDP and making our way from show to show again.  There is nothing like the anxiety of looking at a packed show schedule and hoping the show you’re at ends with enough time to make it across town to the next venue to see a random dream match.

I guess there’s always next year.
