Lucha Detroit— Cinco de Mayo Celebration

The party atmosphere of experiencing Lucha in Detroit.

Few things go better together than an ice-cold beer, tequila, and an independent pro wrestling show and that’s what we got at Lucha Detroit – Cinco de Mayo Celebration.  The Garden Theater was a venue I had never been or heard of in Detroit, but drove passed it countless times.  Its smaller size lent perfectly to the intimate feel of a local Indy show, with the crowd packed tight and close to the action.  The scene was set for a perfect Cinco de Mayo party as well as a friends very first wrestling show!  What seems like a new hobby of mine, stripping away the virgin wrestling eyes of another newcomer to the wrestling world.

Naturally, our celebrations started early at home resulting in a fashionably late entrance but the timing couldn’t have been better.  The show notably featured Mil Muertes, of Lucha Underground fame, as well as AeroBoy and many wrestlers the WE boys have seen around the Detroit Indy promotions.  The 1st match that started as we got there also included, to my surprise, Alex Shelly of the Motor City Machine Guns!  Someone must’ve heard my cringe on the podcast last week and moved some more talent to this show as I believe he was originally booked to be at another metro Detroit show.  It’s hard to be popularly known from being from the Motor City and get a lot of heat and boos from the crowd but when you face a luchador, AeroBoy, on Cinco de Mayo, anything is possible.  Shelly really gave it to the crowd to get them to hate him and boy did he have heat.  The crowd was lively from the start as we could hear the cheering as soon as we jumped out of our Uber on Woodward Ave!  Later, after an intermission, we got to see the tag team of Gregory Iron and Zach Gowen, the Handicapped Heroes, wrestle in an ICP Juggalo gimmick, Faygo and all.  Mil Muertes looked like he hadn’t aged since Lucha Underground.  The crowd went home happy as Muertes took home the win over his opponent and went straight to the lobby to sell gimmicks and take pics!

The most memorable moment of show was our fresh wrestling fan, Muna, making friends with a local talent in full gimmick at the line for the bar.  A few minutes later and we were ripping shots of tequila with our new Lucha friend!  This show was the perfect event to take a person who has never been to a show let alone watched wrestling.  The intimate setting brought everyone close and quickly became one big friendly group; the holiday lent perfectly to a tequila-fueled party, and the wrestling was so quick and so close that it got the blood pumping for more wrestling!  Lucha Detroit, an offshoot of the Sanctuary Fight Club promotion, definitely got a fan who’ll be a follower that brings more new fans to future shows!

This was the perfect appetizer for the AEW Dynamite and Rampage we’ll get in Detroit this Wednesday that is shaping up to be great with a steel cage match in Omega vs. Moxley, an International Title match between Orange Cassidy and Daniel Garcia, and a Fenix vs. Claudio match.  I am pumped up and won’t have to wait much longer for some more live wrestling action!!

A Celebration! (Credit-Sean Nash)
