Here’s where we landed with Rampage from Albany this week. Curious how we rank matches? We’ve got a rubric for that.

AEW Rampage - 9/16/2022

  • Darby Allin def. Matt Hardy: ★

  • Penelope Ford def. Willow Nightingale: ★

  • Ethan Page def. Danhausen: ★

  • Samoa Joe def. Josh Woods to retain the ROH TV Title: ★★

Show Highlight—

  • Wardlow and Joe face to face.  This show didn’t provide much for must-see moments, but Wardlow and Joe eyeing each other was a cool visual and an interesting possible program for Full Gear.  If Wardlow is able to powerbomb Joe that’s going to be part of AEWs highlight packages for years to come.

What Worked—

  • Going for ocho.  You could almost see Jericho’s wheels turning when he realized he stumbled on stupid gold by saying “ocho” repeatedly.  At least his challenge had motivation behind it.  As a viewer, you almost thought Claudio was going to challenge Yuta for a moment there.

What Didn’t Work—

  • Matt Hardy needs to retire.  There’s no nice way to say it.  Hardy’s nearing Sheik-level immobility right now.

Show Cringe—

  • Dark Rampage.  This card felt indistinguishable with Dark.  It’s like the entire show felt like a picture-in-picture break.  One would assume the quality will go up once we get Grand Slam and go live in October, but you have to entice people into wanting to go to these shows, and the reputation of Rampage even amongst ardent supporters is it’s an afterthought.
