AEW Rampage-St. Patrick’s Day Slam Match Ratings and Commentary
Here’s how we rated this special St. Patrick’s Day edition of Rampage. Curious how we rank matches? We’ve got a rubric for that.
AEW Rampage - 3/17/2023
Powerhouse Hobbs def. Rey Fenix to retain the AEW TNT Championship: ★★★
Tara Valkyrie def. Ava Lawless: ★
2.0 def. The Bollywood Boyz: ★
Daniel Garcia def. Brody King: ★★
Show Highlight—
Hobbs vs. Fenix. Hobbs needed a credible opponent to establish his title run and Fenix was game to let himself be more or less gobbled up. The pace was deliberate, hence the nerve holds, but done to cement Hobbs as a monster heel. The combo of the pounce into the corner and spinebuster looked devastating. There’s so much fretting about TNT title runs not living up to past champions but with Hobbs, all they need to do is have the champ get credible wins in open challenges every week and he’ll be fine.
What Worked—
All the videos. Nothing was a classic Tuesday Night Titans bit but these were fun nevertheless. Don Callis greeted Takeshita with drums straight out of a Nathan For You bit; Matt Hardy trained Stokely with the same Ribera Steakhouse jacket Vader wore when he trained in an empty arena on the Starrcade ’93 tape; and the Gunns were ignorant dicks and threw their bags at Top Flight as if they were valets.
Big Show’s commentary. Show got a laugh out of me when he encouraged Garcia to use the sleeper on Brody because it worked in The Princess Bride. “Go to sleep Brody King and may you dream of large women!”
What Didn’t Work—
Garcia vs Brody. More sports entertainment than wrestling, but obviously, that’s Garcia’s character now which made sense for him to stall like Lawler. I’d like them to run it back sometime as they’d have good chemistry in a real wrestling match.
Show Cringe—
Nothing, fine show.
