Show Highlight—
CM Punk returned to a massive pop to have a staredown with Moxley. The two exchanged Rock/Hogan pre-WrestleMania x8 glances. The most valuable match for AEW to run right now. And it’s coming at the biggest show, in front of its most rabid audience. Great shit.
What Worked—
Great in-ring action. All the marque matches delivered.
Clear direction for All Out.
Ricky Starks continues to look like a star. Going out through the people makes a cool guy look even cooler.
“Hangman” turning down the Young Bucks, continuing to show layers, logic and continuity.
Sting’s faicepaint getting the ol’ Malakai Black ocular trampstamp.
What Didn’t Work—
In these post-match donnybrooks, how come Eddie didn’t touch Sammy or Jericho? Or did I miss that?
Trios tournament bracket. You can’t please everyone, and endless debates were going to go off on who should be in and how they should be bracketed, but when there’s such a struggle for camera time, fucking Trustbusters? I get it that Adam Cole and reDRagon aren’t cleared as a collective, for now, it seems, but you really couldn’t have thrown a bone to even, say, the Gunn Club? Or 2.0 and Jake Hager? Or that threesome we saw tonight of FTR and Wardlow? Like any sane person, I’m glad to be spoiled with the left side of that bracket, though.
Is the backstage of AEW the offices of Creative Artists Agency?
Don’t get me wrong, great heel heat with Penta’s mask being stolen. The audience knows that that is a big deal. But how humiliating is it really when his face is painted?
Why isn’t Danhausen sending, oh I dunno, FUCKING HOOK to be his partner? I don’t understand why he isn’t wrestling more frequently. He’s not like an Andre or Show or—just using it as an example here, Great Khali —giant who needs limited minutes to maintain his aura. He’s a star, I don’t get the hot and cold nature of using him inside the ring.
Show Cringe—
Anny Jay’s manic new persona. Poor Anna’s thespian skills continue to be VERY broad. She has all the subtlety of your mom aping Kathy Bates in charades because she drew the word “Misery.”
